Meet the Experts

Tyler Flockhart

Who am I? I am a population ecologist and conservation biologist interested in understanding the factors that influence changes in animal populations and applying decision-theory to design optimal management strategies for species of concern in the face of global change.  My goal with Companion Animal Tools is to link animal welfare practitioners with scientists to ensure data is collected, stored & analyzed to show impact in a scientifically rigorous manner.

What have I done? In the field I has worked on understanding the behavior of feral cats, the abundance and distribution of free-roaming cats and birds in cities, and developing techniques to measure the impacts of cats on birds. I have led the development of several evidence-based population models for cats, and produced novel optimization approaches to animal welfare and reduce impacts.

Where have I trained? I hold a Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. He is a Liber Ero Conservation Fellow.

What makes me tick? Project design, Spatial data analysis, Statistical analysis, Computer modeling, Data visualization, Working with diverse stakeholders

Who am I? I am a wildlife ecologist and conservation biologist who also works as a consultant with Humane Society of the U.S. and other animal welfare organizations specializing in population monitoring.  My goal with Companion Animal Tools is to assist animal experts make the best decisions for their organizations for improving animal welfare.

What have I done? I have contributed to several dozen programs around the world designed to improve the humane management of free-roaming dogs and cats. I was a founding scientist behind the DC Cat Count project, I am Board Chair of the SPCA of Northern Nevada, Board Vice-Chair of the Alliance for Contraception in Cats & Dogs, and a board member of the Petfinder Foundation. I lead applied research, monitoring, and conservation planning projects throughout much of the western United States and am the Research Director at the Great Basin Bird Observatory in Reno, NV, USA.

Where have I trained? I have a Ph.D. in Environmental, Population, and Organismal Biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

What makes me tick? Project design, Spatial data management & visualization, Working with diverse stakeholders, Collecting field data
